My main research interests are associated with design thinking and the psychology of conceptual discovery. Topics of particular interest within this area of investigation include the extent and role of insight in design discovery, qualitative aspects of discovery experiences, incubation and latent preparation, and individual variables such as focusing strategies and action styles. The research has two main intentions, apart from satisfying an abiding curiosity: 1) To develop a deeper and more accurate understanding of how designers actually carry out their creative work and why individual designers are so different, and 2) To provide a wider and more individually sensitive array of models of designing to assist young individuals in the development of their unique modes and skills of organisational foresight, upon which their designing depends.

My teaching activities include undergraduate CAD units associated with AutoCAD, Revit and ArchiCAD. My postgraduate teaching mainly involves development of a new unit of study, focusing on Design Thinking, that commenced in 2009.
