SHOWCASE 05: an exhibition of the work of recent alumni

Recent alumni of the Faculty are warmly invited to display their work in a new exhibition being mounted by the Architecture Alumni Association, in the new FacultyHearth, in September. This is an outstanding opportunity to bring the achievements of alumni to the attention of the professional, academic and student communities and to give alumni the chance to meet and review their recent successes.

SHOWCASE 05 is open to all graduates of the Faculty, both undergraduate and postgraduate, in all disciplines. More information is available at the end of this bulletin. Please tell your friends who may not be on the Faculty mailing list yet!

EXHIBITS
Any projects, built or unbuilt, designed or managed since graduation are welcome. These may be in the original discipline studied, or in any related area of endeavour undertaken subsequently such as photography, art, applied design, engineering, entrepreneurship, management etc.

Exhibits will be expected to display a high level of achievement and be professionally presented. The exhibition coordinator reserves the right not to hang exhibits that are not of a sufficient standard, or whose exhibitors have not registered beforehand.

Exhibits will be pinned to display walls in the new Student Hearth on the ground floor of the refurbished Wilkinson building. At this stage it is envisaged that up to 2 A1 panels per exhibitor will be hung, however this may be reduced to 1 A1 panel if registrations exceed the available wall space. In order to optimise wall space, exhibitors are asked to present their panels in portrait not landscape format. Exhibits must be mounted on lightweight foam core board, and clearly show the exhibitor's name and year of graduation. Panels should be self explanatory, and loose handouts may be attached if desired.

The Hearth area is not secured and the security or safety of exhibits cannot be guaranteed, and neither the AAA nor the University will accept any liability for loss or damage. Ehibitors must bear the cost of their submissions and transport to and from the venue. Uncollected exhibits may be destroyed.

Models may be exhibited if space permits, with prior agreement of the exhibition coordinator.

The written approval of clients should also be submitted if their names or the addresses of their properties are to be published.

Alumni President's Letter

At the start of last year, I wrote that "The Alumni Association has decided to focus its activities in two areas – fundraising in support of the Faculty and creating links between alumni and students. Along the way, we want to create social and professional networks amongst alumni and to provide a range of social functions to strengthen the bonds between us."

With the very active involvement of the Council of the Association, supported by the Dean, Professor Gary Moore, we have achieved a good start to those objectives.

The Association held cocktail gatherings hosted by members David Tregonning and Michael Neustein, ran a successful first-ever Careers Market Day in August and implemented a mentoring scheme for students in the Bachelor of Architecture program. Members of the Council were appointed to the Professional Advisory Committees of a number of Faculty programs, extending alumni links and providing further industry input into courses.

However, the Faculty’s biggest success came in fundraising for Stage 3 of the Wilkinson Building renovations. The Faculty, with help from the Alumni Association, managed to raise over $300,000 for the year, a modest total but a very important improvement. Gary Rothwell BArch ‘67of Winten Property Group is to be especially thanked for his encouragement and financial support.

We have plans for 2005! We have already committed to the second Careers Market Day to be held on Wednesday 17 August. We plan to extend the mentoring program into the Bachelor of Design(Arch) program. With the imminent completion of the Faculty “Hearth” (coffee and exhibition space), regular social functions are planned commencing on the evening of Wednesday 1 June. Our AGM is scheduled for Thursday 21 April at 5:30pm in Lecture Theatre 3 at the Faculty, hosted by the Dean. You are all invited as the evening will provide an opportunity to see the nearly complete Stage 3 renovations.

This year, we are trying to extend our data base to include email addresses for all alumni so that we can be in more regular and timely contact. Please take the time to log onto the University website (www.usyd.edu.au/alumni), go to your record and put in your email address. Ultimately, we hope to reduce printing and postage costs greatly.

Council membership during 2004 was:
Robert Cahill BSc(Arch) ‘74, BArch ‘77Varoujan Bedrossian MDesSc ‘97Robert Hosking BSc(Arch) ’72, BArch ‘77Masaaki Ikeda MTCP ‘78Peter McDonnell BArch ‘63Michael Neustein (President) BArch ‘71David Tregoning BArch ’74 (transferred to Hong Kong during year)David Turner BArch ’71, MDesSc ‘97
